Glucagon Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) and Glucagon Like Peptide-1/Glucose dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GLP-1/GIP) receptor agonist Medication Options:
• Semaglutide • Tirzepatide
What are GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP Agonists:
GLP-1 agonist medications lower blood sugar levels and promote weight loss. There are many different options, but there are two that are FDA approved for weight loss that we offer. They are called Semaglutide and Tirzepatide. Semaglutide has been approved by the FDA for weight loss for some time. Tirzepatide which had been approved for Diabetes management was also approved for weight loss recently.
These medications are injectable, meaning you inject the medication with a needle and syringe. You give the shots just under the skin in the abdomen or outer thigh.
GLP-1 is a hormone in your body that triggers release of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin is an essential hormone that lowers the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. GLP-1 also blocks glucagon secretion. Glucagon is a hormone your body uses to raise blood sugar levels. GLP-1 also slows stomach emptying which means that your body releases less sugar from the food you eat into your blood. Finally, GLP-1 increases how full you feel after eating which reduces hunger. The weight loss medications work by mimicking the actions of the GLP-1 hormone.
Effective management of weight loss often requires other modalities along with the GLP-1 agonists including exercise and dietary changes. However, these medications alone have shown impressive weight loss outcomes. Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are once weekly injectable medications. When you are treated with Belladonna-ATX, we will provide an initial In-person or telehealth intake appointment and monthly telehealth check ins to ensure you are achieving the best results possible. We are also available for home visits if needed, which we will discuss with you during your intake.
Potential benefits of GLP-1 medications beyond weight loss include lowering blood pressure, improving lipid disorders and lowering your risk for heart disease and kidney disease.
Possible side effects of GLP-1 medications include:
Loss of appetite
